Stress Management

Tips from an experienced professional.

Remarkable and astonishing are the scientific developments of the day. In spite of all these happenings, almost all the human beings experience some kind of stress and strain. An individual's success or failure in controlling stressful situations can have a deep effecton his/her ability to function. Scientific discoveries do not suggest any remedy to the problem. On the other hand, the Shastras, which advocate the ways and means for the well being of thehuman beings is neglected and abandoned. Stress arises in a person when his/her mind overpowers his intellect. Mind produces endless desires. The intellect alone can control them. When the intellect controls your desires, they become disciplined and determined. They then assume the form of an aim, ambition,a goal or an ideal in our life. If the intellect loses its control over desires they  turn into great anxieties, lust and greed. In that state, our mind becomes more disturbed, more stressful. Our intellect must constantly exercise its control over this mental agitation. That will reduce our stress and strain in life.

To reduce stress:

1. To discard the attitude of expecting the entire world to bow down to our personal likes and dislikes. To correctly analyze and assess the people, environment and situation we face. Also to realize that "To err is human".

2. Not to dissipate our energy by worrying about the past.

3. Not to hang on future hopes but, to be contented with our present lot and then plan to go higher.

4. To reduce our ego. That is, I am supreme, I alone exist, I am the doer feeling.

5. To forego inferiority, superiority complexes. Everyone of us have a place in this world. There is no, more important and less important, human being. We have a part to play in our life. Let us identify our part and play it well with joy and love. Let us use our talents to discover inner peace and happiness.

6. Haste is waste and hence to avoid hastiness. At the same time it is better late, than never.

7. Self introspection leads to the realization of the goal.

8. Try to realize the supreme self.

Practicing, the path of action- for the physical body, the path of devotion- for the mind, and the path of Knowledge- for the intellect, we can reduce our desires and purify our mind. Then we have to direct the prepared mind towards meditation to discover the supreme self. Meditation is the art of keeping the mind in sharp focus upon a single thought to the exclusion of all other thoughts. The ultimate experience is our enjoyment of absolute freedom from stress. The cultivation of concentration is forced on an individual to meet the situations created by the demands of his/her  profession. Concentration is achieved by constant striving. We all know that, Sun's rays if made to pass through a convex lens and then made to fall on a piece of paper they can burn the paper. But, when the rays are scattered they cannot do it so. If great things are to be achieved then the distracted energies of the mind should be channeled. Each individual has to personally choose his own particular object of concentration. We concentrate upon things, which we love and show interest and we love those things, upon which we concentrate.Concentration is impossible for one with a weak body and a weak mind.

Some tips to acquire a good physical and mental health:

1. It is good that we live in a home, which is designed and constructed as per the Vastu Shastra.

2. Early to bed and early to rise is most essential for good health

3. After getting up early one should clean one's teeth, wash one's face, drink a galss of water and should go to answer the call of nature. Exposing to rising sun's rays in winter and  breathing air in summer adds to our life span.

4. Morning and evening walk in a pollution free environment is good for health. Of course, physical exercises, some physical activities or Yogasanas under the guidance of someexperienced teacher will definitely improve our health conditions.

5. It is essential to take bath daily with fresh water. Bathing imparts activeness and freshness to the body and the mind.

6. For proper development and growth of the body give up tight clothes. Clothes should be simple, comfortable and to suit the weather conditions.

7. Prana is the essence of life. For longivity always breath through the nose and never through the mouth. The mind is brought under control, by regular systematic breathing by governing the gross body first and then the fine body.

8. Idle man's mind is devil's workshop. Hence, not to allow the mind to rot, but to develop noble thoughts. To do only good deeds. To train to have the sense organs under control.

9. To have undeterred faith on ourselves and in the Almighty.

10. Knowledge is power and we should keep on acquiring knowledge.

11. To entertain a high and noble ideal in life and direct our actions towards it.

12. To overwork is to destroy oneself.

13. Food is essential for growth, to take care of wear and tear of our body parts, to regain the spent energy in doing various work, to protect us from diseases. For this a balanced diet, which is suitable in all respects, sufficient in food value as well as adquate in quality and quantity according to the needs of the body. We need food to live but we should not live for food. The ideal food is the natural food which Mother Nature offers us. Nuts, fruits, vegetables, edible green leaves, sprouted pulses and cereal, milk, curd, buttermilk, dates, honey, jaggery, wheat, rice etc.,

14. Overeating is an invitation to diseases.

15. Excessive hot or cold eatables give rise to various diseases.

16. Consumption of intoxicating drinks like liquor affect the heart.

17. Fasting once a weak eliminates  all abdominal disorders.

18. One should fill half the stomach with food and leave one- fourth for water and one- fourth for the movement of air.Water should be taken half an hour before or one hour after the meals. We should drink water several times between our lunch and supper. To swallow the food along with water will not allow the digestive saliva of the mouth to mix with their food and hinders proper digestion.

19. Going to bed immediately after meals is injurious for health.

20. Cleaning the teeth in the night before going to bed will prevent rot in the mouth and subsequent spoiling of our teeth and gums.

21. Sound sleep is the sign of good health. The place of sleeping should be clean and airy.Windows should be open to let in fresh air. It is not correct to sleep with face covered. Sound sleep is induced by washing the feet with lukewarm water before going to bed.

22. Sleeping with feet directed towards south leads to many disorders of heart and mind.

23. Excessive sleep reduces the life span.

24. Never check the urge for urination, evacuation of bowels, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, yawning etc., for their suppression is an open invitation to ailments.

To the extent possible let us put into practice of the above tips and experience for ourselves the change it makes in our life. It is wise if these traits are developed from early childhood.

A country's future depends on the development of its human resources, which really means the advancement of health and mental caliber of the individual. That will lead to happiness and prosperity of an individual and in turn will create peace and harmony in the family, society, nation and in the globe.
